Language
Why would I indicate language under my skills profile?
In my weird way of thinking, language is a resource. I argue that the more conversant you are in your language, the better off you are. Of course this argument applies to other languages you may know but are not home languages. But language is a core resource.
Language is the very first thing people use to identify you. Language is therefore part of who you are, your identity. Alongside the same logic, language is part of a rich culture and heritage, to which all of us belong.
I am therefore blessed to be this knowledgeable about my languages. It is for this reason that I am highly conscious of my culture. After all, it is for this very reason that I am who I am.
I am umXhosa. I speak Sesotho because my mother is a Mosotho. Okay, I speak better Sesotho than isiXhosa, but that is another story! I speak English because, well English is English I guess.
Because I speak isiXhosa, I can understand isiZulu, isiSwati and isiNdebele. Because I speak Sesotho I can understand Setswana. I have elementary knowledge of Afrikaans.
Why is this important? Because I can travel and live anywhere in Southern Africa without a problem communicating with people.
